ABOUT

Tina Traster

For twenty-five years, I wrote stories about other people and their lives. After I left my beloved city life in Manhattan and moved to a Hudson River town, my most interesting subject became me. Thus Burb Appeal - a little column about a hard-core urbanite embracing/navigating suburban life - was born in The New York Post. For five years, that column and other essays about my life have been my bread and butter. Burb Appeal, the collection, an e-book and a paperback, pulls this work together.

My work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, literary journals, on NPR, The Huffington Post, House Magazine, Mamazina, The Nervous Breakdown, the Mom Egg, Whistling Fire, The Feline Muse, Adoptive Family Magazine, and more. An essay about bonding with my adopted daughter is anthologized in two collections: Whispering Angel Books and Mammas and Pappas from City Works Press.

I’ve been a published writer since 1987. My essays, articles and columns have appeared in more than 40 publications including The New York Post, The New York Times, The Bergen Record, The Journal News, The Asbury Park Press, Time Out New York, Crain's New York Business, Inside Magazine, and New Jersey Monthly.

Other publications I’ve written for include Family Circle, Parade, Ski Magazine, Business Traveler, American Holiday & Life, Elegant Bride, Country Inn Magazine, World, American Demographics, Fancy Food, Wit, Audubon, Animal Watch, New Jersey Savvy Living and Boca Raton Magazine.

During a ten-year newspaper career in New Jersey, I covered everything: environmental battles, politics, breaking news, tragedies, oddball features. In my reporting, one thing remains consistent: a sharp eye for the human condition. My fascination with the heart and soul is what led me to become a journalist in the first place.

I won the 1996 Garden State Association of Black Journalists second-place award for coverage of the fatal shooting of an African-American youth, and was part of the team that won the 1994 New Jersey Press Association first place award for enterprise reporting on a youth killed in a freak sinkhole accident.

I am currently at work on a collection of essays.

I live in a New York Hudson River town with my husband, daughter, cats and chickens.

When I'm not taking my temperature to see if a "column or essay" is coming on I can be found hiking, swimming, gardening, feeding my chickens or snapping photos.

Rick Tannenbaum

I am a publisher of eBooks and paperbacks.

With degrees in Business Administration and Law, I've used my education and experience in a series of entrepreneurial endeavors. As an attorney, I negotiated literary rights contracts and engaged in the buying and selling of copyrighted material for profit.

Always with an eye toward marketing, I focus my efforts on finding publishable literary works and bringing them to a mass audience through digital publishing.

When Amazon opened its Kindle platform to shorter pieces through Kindle Singles and Kindle Shorts, I saw an opportunity to publish shorter works - novellas, plays, short stories, collections and anthologies. When Barnes & Noble opened its Nook to similarly sized pieces, a business opportunity presented itself. In 2010, Hen House Press was formed.

When authors sought additional exposure, I expanded the offerings of Hen House Press to include the print-on-demand publishing of paperback books. The two media, eBooks and Print-On-Demand complement each other and offer authors an opportunity to reap royalties from multiple sources, as well as purchase books for themselves to market directly to readers at writers' fairs, readings and other literary venues.

I have been involved in book design since 1999 when I took courses in letterpress printing and book design at the New York Center for Book Arts. At a shared studio in Jersey City, I honed my craft and continue to study letterpress and linoleum block printing, as related to book design.

I am also at work on a novel. I, take classes at the Hudson Valley Writer's Center, and regularly read at open-mike venues in my area.

When not hovering over my computer, I can be found baking bread, tinkering in my workshop, caring for my hens, or planning the expansion of my garden beds.

2021 Update: I have to admit that being in a lock down due to the Covid 19 pandemic for almost 4 months in Melbourne, Australia nearly broke my mental health. I couldn't go to my local club to play some pokies for relaxation or socially visit mates. I ended up like many Australians by going online to find casino websites that were Australian friendly. I ended up finding this one great site that pointed me in the right direction. Found several online casinos where I spent a lot of time in trying to escape. My girl friend went in the opposite direction for her mental health by buying the Kindle version of Born Perfect by Cheryl Grogi. She said it was like having a working therapy session right in the comfort of your own home. Reading the Amazon reviews below pretty much sums up my girl friend felt about the book. We both made it through the lock down, celebrating like everyone else when it was lifted. That was 2020. Terrible year. Here we are in 2021 and once again a year later and Australia once again prolongs another COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria amid Delta outbreak. I think I might take a look at my girl friend's Kindle version of Born Perfect this time around. I need something more than spending my time and money by playing online pokies all evening.

Perfect reading on my Maui Vacation
April 5, 2018

I took a kindle version of Born Perfect: Returning to the Perfect You with me when I took a vacation on the tropical Hawaain island of Maui. I stayed at a Lahaina vacation rental condo unit that faced west over looking the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. Every morning I would eat breakfast on the lanai reading the Born Perfect: Returning to the Perfect You. Later in the morning I would do the simple exercises before I did my daily half hour of yoga. Then it would be off for a day of adventure snorkeling, hiking and visitng the many lovely botanical gardens that are open to the public. Watching the sun rise at the top of Haleakala with its stark volcanic landscape which is deeply sculpted, richly colored, and intensely evocative was unlike any landcape I have known. I went a second time to the top with a sunset /star gazing tour which offers for some of the best stargazing in the world. Returning back to NYC I felt refreshed and renewed. Born Perfect: Returning to the Perfect You and Maui is the perfect combination for the anxious, stressed out person. It certainly worked for me.

“Song of the Heart” series, by Francine Vale, designed and produced by Hen House Press

Posted on August 9, 2013 by Rick

final-cover-book1

FRANCINE VALE’S Song of the Heart series (Walking the Path of Light and Into Higher Realms) have been designed and produced by Hen House Press, with cover designs by Hudson Valley graphic artist Keri Sheheen.

According to Ms. Vale, Walking the Path of Light, is an autobiographical novel. Names have been changed, and in a small number of instances similar events converge as one, mostly in conversations, bringing together bits of conversations to form a more cohesive discussion on the page. Overarching all else “Song of the Heart” is a search for truth and it is about the discovery of truth as it unfolds in our lives from within us and all around us. Even if we try to hide from the truth and create a personal fantasy to guide our days, truth eventually will be revealed.  Walking the Path of Light is available as an eBook from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

final-cover2

Into Higher Realms (Book Two) is destined to reach deep inside your heart, uplift your frequency, help you see yourself and those you love through a kinder lens, and move more fully into a new Earth defined by peace, love and freedom.  It could be said that golden light is embedded on every page. The language and arrangement of words on the pages of “Song of the Heart” was designed to bring greater awareness of the absolute necessity for love and the power of love to shift the energy at every turn in our lives. It was designed to transform and uplift the consciousness of its readers into a higher frequency never before available yet available now for all who so desire and open to receive it.  Into Higher Realms is also available as an eBook from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Frederick Gerty Science Fiction, Designed and Produced by Hen House Press

Posted on July 13, 2013 by Rick

Situation at Saxon Site

THE FIRST TWO BOOKS of Frederick Gerty’s Saxon Saga (Situation at Saxon Site and Earth Lady) have been designed and produced by Hen House Press, with cover designs by Hudson Valley graphic artist Keri Sheheen.

Meet the Author: Reading a found and battered copy of Analog magazine on a rainy summer’s day in Vermont first exposed Frederick Gerty to the world of science fiction. He subscribed to that magazine for many years, and finally, rather late in life, began writing some himself.

One book lead to a second — he just couldn’t finish the yarn in 40 chapters, and on to a third. He found his characters grew and produced offspring with stories of their own. More books followed, until he’d assembled a double trilogy — six books in all — centered on amazing and impossible (to us) anti-gravity technology. Imagine, as he does, the ability to fly anywhere we’d like to go, instead of being confined to roads. What would people do? What would the world be like? The Saxon Saga follows the lives and adventures of the Saxon family as they find out.

Earth Lady

Frederick, now retired from the Forestry Division of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, lives in the Town of Gardiner in upstate New York, with his long-suffering wife, three horses, three dogs, and two birds. He can often be found volunteering and out hiking and photographing on the Mohonk Preserve and other natural areas in the mid-Hudson area of New York.

Situation at Saxon Site (the first book in the Saxon Saga) is available at Amazon.com and from Barnes & Noble.

Earth Lady (the second book in the Saxon Saga) is available at Amazon.com and from Barnes & Noble.

Did Crown Business steal my book design? You decide.

Posted onJune 13, 2013 by Rick"

Book Design Theft

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

I understand that imitation (copying) is the sincerest form of flattery, but imitation without attribution, license, or compensation is really just theft, isn’t it? Crown Business has launched its latest blockbuster with what looks like my cover design. It did not seek my permission. It gave me no attribution. It did not offer or pay compensation. Shouldn’t Crown Business (part of Crown Publishing, part of Random House, part of Bertelsmann) come up with its own original designs? Don’t its designers warranty that their work is original? Is it really entitled to take my cover design and claim it as its own, if that is what it did?

When I first saw “The Buy Side” reviewed in the New York Times Business Section on June 2, 2013, I was taken aback. There it was, my book cover design, but with another title – ”The Buy Side” by Turney Duff. One amusing thing about it, is it seems the book is all about the thieves on Wall Street. But what about the thieves on Broadway – the ones who might be out there stealing book designs from other publishers and small presses.

So I reached out to the nice folks at Crown Business and was immediately referred to the legal department at Random House, where a very nice woman and attorney named Min Lee provided me with a one-line response to my inquiry. On June 4, 2013, she wrote: “I am in receipt of your letter, and we’ll review your claim and respond shortly.”  I did not hear back from her.

So, I reached out to her again a few days later and Ms. Lee wrote: “I think you should give me the courtesy of at least 5 business days to respond. . . . [W]e are reviewing your claim and will respond shortly. . . I expect to have a response to you by Monday or Tuesday next week.”

I eagerly waited for Monday, and then Tuesday. No response. Not a word. So I waited an extra day. After all, I imagine that Crown Business (part of Crown Publishing, part of Random House, part of Bertelsmann) is a very busy place, and that they wanted to give their full attention to resolving this matter. It is Thursday now. Not a word. Is it possible that Crown Business (Crown Publishing / Random House / Bertelsmann) is not really looking into the cover “coincidence”? Do they believe that they can use (steal) cover designs from small presses without explanation or consequence? Could this be just a misunderstanding or a unique coincidence (two designers happen to come up with the same cover design at the same time or within a few months of each other)?

Stay tuned. Maybe Ms. Lee will decide to respond after all? Maybe she was taken away on another “more important matter.” I’ll let you know what happens. Meanwhile, please share this blog post. I’d like to see what folks think about the cover design “coincidence.”

Oh, and here is a link to a blog post from last year where we announced our book design on our blog. Check it out. Of course, the design was made and disseminated months before the blog announcement.

A Hemingway fiction in our time, Author Scott Fivelson takes the reader on a Papa-esque journey from Paris to Pamplona as a marathoner on his last legs reflects on the  sport as it might have been written about if Hemingway had been a runner.

Posted on October 15, 2012 by Rick

Hen House Press, LLC is  proud to have designed and produced the eBook and trade paperback of Fifty Two Shades of Blue-ish, by Karen S. Exkorn for Orange Press, Inc.

Synopsis: When virginal Rachel Levine is caught in a compromising position outside a trendy Manhattan bar, she has a chance encounter with a handsome hunk of Jewish man with intoxicating minty breath. Is he the “nice Jewish boy” her grandmother dreamed that she would marry? Or will his buff body and buffed fingernails blur the lines between nice…and naughty?

Striving to find the delicate balance between love, lust…and latkes, Rachel finds herself surrendering to her sexual cravings, with a hunger for more than just matzah balls. Over candlelit dinners with Manischewitz on ice, Rachel succumbs to the forbidden desires of her manly man…and her inner princess (Jewish American Princess, that is).

Bursting with humor and erotica, “Fifty Two Shades of Blue-ish” is a pulsating, page-turning parody that will stir up your every fantasy…and your Jewish guilt (even if you’re not Jewish!)

From Columnist to Ebook Author: Tina Traster’s Journey

Posted on September 28, 2012 by Rick

Traster, a freelancer since 1999, got interested in publishing her first ebook when she realized she’d written 50 essays on her foray into suburbia–and wanted to do more with them. She didn’t think it would be easy to find a traditional publisher for a collection of material that had been previously published so she looked for other options. She fortunately had retained the contractual rights to her material.
